A time of gifts5/23/2023 Plantation Under The Sea Guyana 2007: Plantation Rum is another one of my can’t-miss favorite brands, but has a totally different approach. Plantation ages its rums a second time in France, using cognac barrels, and the vintage Guyana 2007. Sure, you can make a great cocktail as well, but better rums stand toe to toe with great whiskies, brandies or agave spirits as something you can enjoy on their own, and that’s the gift you want to give. Let’s skip unaged white rums, which are for very basic cocktails, short-aged mass-produced dark rums that are for slightly better cocktails, spiced rums which just don’t make any sense at all, and stick with the good stuff, dark aged rums for sipping. Why? Because rum remains one of the most undiscovered great spirits, and like wine, comes in so many different forms from very different places. Scotch, bourbon or tequila can all be good choices if you know your audience, but if that audience includes a food and beverage connoisseur, someone who likes to try different tastes and appreciates the finer things in life, I suggest rum. The holidays are a time of gift giving, and one of the most popular gifts is a good bottle of booze. If someone on your Holiday Gift list enjoys spirits, shake things up this year with a fine rum.
